PieceWork has reproduced here the stocking knitting material from the Third and Fourth Series with 30 patterns. The Third Series features sixteen patterns; the Fourth Series has fourteen. Among the patterns are the intriguing Ladies Silk Stocking, Ribbed in Stripes; stellar Boy’s Knickerbocker Stocking; classic Gentleman’s Bicycle Stockings, Cable and Rib; adorable Baby’s First Sock, in Basket Pattern; jaunty and  colorful Dice Check Stocking for Youth; and to mix it up a little, the lovely Feather Pattern Sock worked on two needles instead of the typical four. Instructions might perplex a contemporary knitter accustomed to detailed charts and succinct directions, but the patterns are often ingenious. Many of the objects transcend the century-plus span of years since they were devised.

This book serves as a curiosity, an inspiration, a resource, and a link to a time beyond our memories. In using and enjoying it, you keep the craft alive. It is a fitting example of needlework and history, hand in hand.
