For years Spindles were largely considered a secondary tool among handspinners. Sure you might learn how to  spin on a drop spindle so that you could understand the process, but any selfrespecting  spinner would soon graduate to a spinning wheel when given a chance.  Or so the notion went. Of course, this attitude denied the rich history of spindles  and spinning traditions around the world. All you have to do is consider the  millions of yards of spindle-spun threads that composed the sails of Viking ships,  the vibrant magical cloth of Indonesia, the mummy wrappings of ancient Egypt, or  the ceremonial cloaks of Peru to understand that a spindle is a powerful and useful  tool for making yarn. The Spring 1995 issue was instrumental in dispelling those  notions among modern spinners and offering insight into a simple tool that has  profound capacity for making yarn.

This is a rich compilation of many of the articles from the Spring 1995 “spindle issue,”with the addition of other gems about handspindles that had been published over the years in Spin.Off. In this eBook edition, we’ve divided the content to  make it more nimble as a digital download. We placed the articles that focus  on how to spin on a handspindle in A Handspindle Treasury: Spindle Spinning  and the articles about spinning traditions in A Handspindle Treasury: Spinning  Around the World.
