The palette features all natural colors, with the true black overdyed for depth of color. These simple natural shades evoke the clean and sparse beauty of the landscape from which they originate and they all work beautifully together.
(Halcyon Yarn stocks all available colors of Jöklalopi.)
Chunky winter sweaters, the coziest of blankets, and bold, toasty-warm accessories are all a treat in this natural beauty. There is a slight halo which adds warmth and elegance but may make pieces less suitable for close wear next to your skin. Works up quickly in a chunky gauge and the slightly thick-thin look gives pieces a rustic handmade charm while still being even and easy to work with.
The single-ply construction can cause works in progress (or fresh off the loom) to pull or “slant” slightly on the bias of the twist. Wet-finishing and blocking will resolve this beautifully and will help your pieces soften and full. We recommend swatching/sampling to confirm your gauge or sett, especially if an exact measurement is desired.
Weavers: we recommend using Jöklalopi in your weft rather than warp (overshot with warp at 8-10 epi in Harrisville Highland, then two tabby wefts between pattern wefts for instance). If you choose to warp with it please use a wide-dent reed that gives it space not to rub in the dents and check that your heddle eyes are large enough to accommodate it without catching. You’ll need to be gentle throughout the process because even though it is thick the twist is relatively loose so it can break if it is not kept smooth and gently tensioned. It can be beautiful, but we recommend using Jöklalopi in weft-faced pieces and to make a practice sample first!
Jöklalopi yarn, like all of the Lopi collections, is minimally processed to retain the natural look and amazing qualities of the wool itself. It is not superwash and will felt if desired. Lopi yarns are entirely produced in Iceland and are among the most sustainable in the world. From employee-ownership of the company, to the high-efficiency mill, to the extremely high standards of animal care, Lopi yarns live up to all of the best values we believe a yarn should have. Plus items made in Lopi yarns will “last forever” with proper care and are beautiful for generations to come!
Care: Handwash gently in cool water with a delicate laundry soap. Do not wring or agitate as this yarn will felt. Block and lay flat to dry.
